Looking into our past…
New Port Adelaide
Railway Station
Considerable progress has been made
with the erection of the new Port Adelaide
Railway Station by the contractor (Mr S Perry).
The present contract consists of building a
portion of the approach to the station, the
foundations and superstructure carrying
the overhead station and a portion of the
elevated railway. Starting from Clare street,
Portland Estate, the job extends across a
vacant piece of land, to the eastern side of
Commercial road. In order to carry the piers
and pillars 278 concrete piles were driven
to an average depth of 26 ft. into the earth,
and upon these foundations are being built
the concrete piers and cast iron columns.
The whole of the 17 concrete foundations
have been completed, four of the small piers
forming the approach to the station are ready,
with one yet to erect. The railway offices will
be constructed between the iron columns.
The long embankment extending from Hart
street, Glanville, along the southern front
of the Port Adelaide Canal is practically
complete. This work has been efficiently
carried out by Mr A. Hunter.

Share your memories of
Semaphore Library
What are your memories of Semaphore
Library? Do you have any old photos?
This year the Semaphore Institute building
will be 130 years old and the Semaphore
Library 20 years old. The Semaphore Institute
first opened in 1884 and since then has
gone through many changes including
Institute building, Town Hall, picture theatre
and boxing gym… the Semaphore Library
building has seen it all!
We are asking people to share their memories
of the venue and we are also seeking copies
of photos that will be incorporated into a
display in Semaphore Library during the
About Time History Festival in May, so they
can be preserved for future generations. If
you have something to share, please contact
the Local History Officer on 8405 6071.
National Simultaneous
Storytime
Every year a picture book that’s been written and
illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read
simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare
centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places
around the country.
National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually as part of
Library Information Week. It aims to promote the value of
reading and literacy, promote the value and fun of books,
promote an Australian writer and publisher, and to promote
storytime activities in public libraries and communities
around the country.
This year the picture book is
Too many elephants in this
house
, written by Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by
Andrew Joyner.
Port Adelaide Enfield Library Service will be involved, with
each of its Library sites holding readings of the book as part
of their regular Preschool sessions with a great elephant craft
after the story.
So come along with your child or children and enjoy these
wonderful sessions:
• Monday 19 May 10.15-10.45am - Port Library
• Tuesday 20 May 10.15-10.45am - Greenacres Library
