True North success
‘A Sense of Home’ was the debut production by True North
Youth Theatre Ensemble, supported by the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield’s Cultural Development Grants Program.
Directed by local Hillcrest resident and multi award-
winning director Alirio Zavarce, the show received
excellent reviews including:
“This show is more than just theatre…This show has soul”
– The Advertiser.
“Alirio Zavarce has done it again. This talented director
seems to have a knack of pulling together a group of
people, offering them a safe haven to explore their world
and then asks them to share it with an audience. Bravo
Alirio, bring on the next production because I’ll be there
ready, sitting in the front row with my hanky.”
Giselle R.- TalkFringe.
“Director Alirio Zavarce dreamed of using theatre
making as a teaching tool and that’s exactly what he’s
accomplished. Within a year, Adelaide’s newest youth
theatre company has created young artists who write the
script, compose songs, create puppetry and bring it all
together in their first show which tackles that big question:
what makes a sense of home?”
Kylie Pedler - Adelaide
Theatre Guide.
“This ensemble tugs on the heartstrings with its insightful
and diverse descriptions of home. If ‘memories are what
makes a home’, then it stands to reason that A Sense of
Home will leave an indelible memory in your heart.”
Patricia Herreen - In Daily.
“The actors manipulate words and images in view of the
audience. This is a sweet and honest show that offers gentle
insights into the thoughts and attitudes of young people,
and leaves you with a good feeling…the children in the
audience especially loved it.”
Louise Nunn - The Advertiser.
“Stories of climbing trees, telling ghost stories and
moving overseas into extraordinary works of theatrical
art. A Sense of Home will no doubt bring you back to a
world of childish innocence and fun and will, of course,
make you go “Awww” a good few times!”
James Rudd –
GlamAdelaide.

New parent resource
An exciting new GreatStart parent website has
been developed to provide ideas and activities
for parents to develop their children’s early
numeracy and literary skills.
Part of the Department for Education and
Children Development’s Numeracy and Literacy
Strategy, it is framed around everyday family
events - play, food, out and about, growing
and celebrations.
For each activity, information is provided on
why it matters and what it leads to in terms
of numeracy or literacy development, with
examples of the language parents could use
when they engage in the activity with their child.
Activities are searchable by age, materials and
the skills developed. Parents and families are
encouraged to use the website
.
sa.edu.au to give their children the best possible
start to their education.
Three well known
Australians
In 1982 artist Martin Shaw painted ‘Three Well
Known Australians’, which has been touring
Australia ever since. Along the way, people from
all walks of life have been invited to record their
opinion of “who” the three Australians are.
The painting, letters from a huge range of
famous and infamous people, and yearbooks
recording people’s opinions will be on display
in the Civic Centre in Port Adelaide from late
March until late April.
Come and have a look and add your opinion to
this piece of Australian history.
