Birkenhead Bridge
Loop Path
Works on the Birkenhead Bridge Loop Path have seen the
path extended along the waterfront around Shed 26 to
New Port Quays.
In November 2013, resurfacing of Jenkins Street was
completed with fencing and line marking along the path
underway. Works to the car park on Causeway Road
(adjacent the Ethelton train station) and a path to link the
car park to the northern side of the Jervois Bridge have also
recently been completed.
Works along the Birkenhead Bridge commenced in January
this year and are just about complete. The works will see
the continuation of the shared use loop path along the
western side of the bridge, providing a wide, safe passage
for pedestrians and cyclists along the bridge. This section
of the loop path is a key part of the greater “Greenways”
project which allows for safe bicycle commuting between
the city and the suburbs.
Works are also underway on the Jervois Bridge, Jervois
Bridge ramp and along the wharf at Hart’s Mill. The
loop path will provide a 2.2km route around the Inner
Harbour, access to the riverfront and will also incorporate
interpretative signage, seating and shade.
The path will provide opportunities for active lifestyles, a
chance to relax, enjoy views of the river and the Port and
hopefully some dolphin-watching too!

A wild and wet start to
the year
This attractive, eye catching photo of lightning striking the
Birkenhead Bridge was taken by photographer Andrew
Scott, who was in the Port when an electrical storm struck
earlier this year.
We certainly have seen some wild weather during the
first few months of 2014, with storms in January and a
downpour of rain in February. Council took a number
of steps to assist residents who were affected by the
deluge. Environmental Health Officers handled a number
of health-related enquiries and street sweepers were
despatched to remove debris from affected streets. Extra
hard refuse collections were also provided in affected
areas, picking up and disposing of an extra 94 pickups of
general hard waste which totalled 12.240 tonnes.
Council has also recently confirmed that a pump station
will be constructed near Hargrave Street, Peterhead, after
a supporting grant was received from the Stormwater
Management Authority. The total cost of the station, which
is expected to be complete in 2016, will be more that
$11 million. This amount is in addition to the $4 million
spent on stormwater works in this area over the last ten
years. The new Hargrave Street pump station will work in
conjunction with an older pump station located at Elder
Road, Birkenhead. Keep an eye on the Council website
for updates about the pump station project.
