Pressure Indicator:
Sources of Greenhouse gas emissions in South Australia
Fossil fuels are Australia's major energy source; oil (35%), black coal (30%),
natural gas (23%) and brown coal (12%) provide primary energy needs.
Renewable sources (e.g. wind, solar, hydro, biogas and biomass) currently
supply five per cent nationally. Natural gas and renewable technologies are
anticipated to grow significantly over the next 30 years. The use of solar and
wind will dominate the renewable energy sources, however coal and oil will
continue to be far greater primary energy sources (Cuevas-Cubria, C. and
Riwoe, D. 2006).
Figure 2: National and State Energy Source projections to 2029-39
(Data source: ABARE Australian energy: National and state projections to 2029-30, 2006).
Electricity demand is predicted to expand 62% over the next 30 years.
Electricity generation is a major primary energy user.
