Council’s corporate emissions profile (Port Adelaide Enfield Council’s emission
reduction activities as an organisation)
It is important for Council to manage its own corporate greenhouse gas
emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change, in order to support
community initiatives and national programmes to minimise the environmental
and health impacts of global climate change.
Cities for Climate Protection
The ICLEI Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia program assisted local
government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Port
Adelaide Enfield Council first developed an organisational action plan in 1999,
and was the first Council in Australia to complete the planning and review
component of CCP Plus. The Council was a member of the CCP program until
mid 2009.
Council's
Energy and Water Efficiency Management Plan
was first developed in
2006 as a focused approach to reducing Council’s energy and water
consumption, through conservation and efficiencies. It was revised in 2009 and
2012 to update Council’s greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption
profile, and outlines actions that Council will implement to achieve greenhouse
gas and water use reduction targets.
A Council "Green Team" made up of a multi-disciplinary group of staff is
established to implement the plan and identify new initiatives. This group
enables the organisation to identify and implement practical actions and policies
to maximise the conservation and efficient use of natural resources that are
critical to the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the City.
