Natural Heritage
The Council area encompasses a broad range of natural environmental
features. It is likely that the Kaurna people occupied and modified these diverse
ecosystems, from the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges to the tidal estuaries
around Port Adelaide. As represented in Figure 17. (p 86) the area includes four
broadly defined landscapes, the Para Fault Block, Alluvial Plain, Estuarine Plain
and Coastal Dune (Pullen 2006).
The Para Fault Block defines the western margin of the Mount Lofty Ranges,
developed through movement along a series of roughly parallel fault lines. The
escarpment occurs from Gepps Cross to Devon Park including the Torrens
River and Dry Creek (SoE 2007).
