Port Adelaide State Heritage Area
Port Adelaide is South Australia's first State Heritage Area. In 1982 the Port
Adelaide State Heritage was declared as an area of architectural and historic
significance containing South Australia's most substantial and continuous
grouping of colonial buildings. The area is referred to in the Commonwealth’s
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
It has State historic maritime significance and was one of South Australia's
earliest settlements. The remaining extensive government and commercial
buildings reflect the centre's prosperity and importance during the mid and late
1800's.
Extensive storage sheds built in the 1950s separated the town area and the
waterfront. In the 1980s a section of No.1 Shed was demolished to make way
for the old Port Adelaide Lighthouse, with the result that a view of the river
became part of the Commercial Road streetscape.
Between 2008 and 2009, the State Government’s Land Management
Corporation (LMC) worked closely with heritage consultants to dismantle and
store the Central Slip shed at Jenkins Street, Birkenhead to make way for the
New Port Quays Development.
The LMC’s Cultural mapping exercise noted that the Central Slip boating shed
was worthy of preserving as it had unique cultural value. The Cultural Mapping
exercise has researched and documented the history of this area, including oral
histories with the former tenant, John Stockton.
Eighteen historic sites within the Port Adelaide State Heritage Area are State
Heritage Places entered in the South Australian Heritage Register. These
include:
Customs House Complex, Commercial Road (including Telegraph Office,
Institute Building & Customs House)
