Maritime Heritage
Port Adelaide is home to one of South Australia's most significant
archaeological treasures - the largest and most diverse ships' graveyard in
Australia accessible to non-divers. Dispersed throughout the Port Adelaide
River and Barker Inlet are the remains of more than forty sailing, steam, and
motor service vessels.
There are five ‘abandonment sites’ (known as ships' graveyards); the Garden
Island Ships' Graveyard (the largest); Jervois Basin; Mutton Cove; Broad Creek;
and the Angas Inlet.
The brochure titled 'Port Adelaide Ships Graveyards' (see:
) provides a description of each
graveyard site, its accessibility by land and water, a brief account of the ships'
graveyards and the vessels abandoned.
Local Heritage
ʻLocal heritageʼ is heritage of significance to the local area or region. Australia
has adopted a three tier heritage system aligning heritage management to the
three tiers of government as established by the Council of Australian
Governments (COAG) agreement in 1997.
