state heritage register certain criteria needs to be met - listed in Section 16 of
the Act.
The protection of local heritage is managed through the
Development Act 1993.
Local Government is responsible for initiating the statutory process by which the
Development Plan is amended to include listings of significant individual places
or to create heritage areas.
A Development Plan may designate a place as a place of local heritage value if
it satisfies one or more of the following criteria in Section 23(4) of the
Development Act 1993:
a) It displays historical, economic or social themes that are of importance to
the local area.
b) It represents customs or ways of life that are characteristic of the local
area.
c) It has played an important part in the lives of local residents.
d) It displays aesthetic merit, design characteristics or construction
techniques of significance to the local area.
e) It is associated with a notable local personality or event.
f) It is a notable landmark in the area.
g) It is of special historical or social significance or importance within the local
area
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield has 205 local heritage sites and 95 state
heritage sites as shown in Map 11 (page 94). There are 9 Historic
(Conservation) Policy Areas and 1 State Heritage Policy Area.
