Port Adelaide Enfield residents have
been digging their old suitcases and
trunks out of storage and attending
storytelling workshops, as part of South
Australia’s History Festival, to find the
best way to tell the stories about their
cases and what’s inside them.
“Suitcases tell many tales,” said Port
Adelaide Enfield Arts & Cultural
Development Officer Jane Marr. “They
are a part of change, moving house, a
journey or holiday and they are used
to store treasures, family heirlooms,
keepsakes and collections.”
Local resident Vicky Crowley, dusted
off the rusty, wood-grained trunk
and striped cardboard suitcase with
metal corners once owned by her
grandmother, which date back to the
1890s when she began working as a
teacher at the age of 14. “They travelled
with her everywhere, from the Riverland
to Maree and Oodnadatta. There’s even
an old sticker from Alice Springs on one
of them.” Later on, married to a railway
employee and living at Murray Bridge,
she travelled everywhere by train,
including travel to railways picnics held
at Semaphore, often taking the suitcase
with her.
“I hear voices coming out of the
suitcase and trunk,” Vicki says. “In a
way they speak to me and make me
want to know more about her life.”
Another local resident Ollie Black also
attended the workshops, bringing along
her late mother’s ancient grey-patterned
cardboard suitcase.
Although her mother used it when
travelling to visit her family in Western
Australia, it’s what it contains that
excites Ollie the most. “I was the first-
born in my family and my mother kept a
huge collection of all the congratulatory
cards and telegrams she received at
the time, along with a huge collection
of photographs of me as a baby and
a child,” Ollie said. Storyteller Helen
Lawry worked with participants to
develop and share their stories, which
will be filmed and then showcased in a
specially designed “suitcase cinema” for
the Port Festival in October 2013.
Suitcases Wanted For Arts Sake
Suitcases have a strong link to the Port.
“Port Adelaide’s history is grounded
by immigrants arriving in Port with
all their worldly possessions in their
suitcases - their treasures, photos and
belongings ready to start a new life
in Australia” says Jane. Consequently
suitcases will feature in a number of
projects within this year’s Port Festival
program, including the development
of an exciting “Suitcase Art Trail”.
Unwanted suitcases are needed. If
you have a suitcase you would like to
donate, please contact Events Officer
Sue McKenzie on 8405 6701.
