An Aboriginal trail for
Lefevre Peninsula
Council has received funding from the Australian
Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water,
Population and Communities to develop a cultural
trail on the Lefevre Peninsula.
In 2007 Council prepared a Kaurna Cultural Heritage
Survey which provided a historical overview of Aboriginal
people living within the Council area and identified a
number of significant sites with the majority located
on the Lefevre Peninsula.
The funding will be used to establish an interpretive
trail that will convey the findings of this survey to the
community and visitors in an accessible manner. The
potential for other features (such as audio) will be explored
and developed as part of the concept phase of the project.
Additional research will be undertaken to identify further
sites and gather more information about Aboriginal
people’s history and memories of the Peninsula. This
research will include engagement with local Aboriginal
elders to record their memories and stories.
The project will connect the northern and southern regions
of the Lefevre Peninsula. Specifically, it will connect:
• Outer Harbor (Mudlangga meaning ‘place of the
nose’). Traditionally, this part of the Peninsula was
where emus were herded and killed by the local
Kaurna people. Today it is the gateway to Adelaide
for visitors arriving by cruise ship. It is envisaged
as the northern ‘launch’ area for the trail.
• The Port Adelaide Centre (Yertabulti). Traditionally,
Aboriginal people would camp along the banks of
the Port Adelaide River, both pre and post
colonisation. Today it is a key business and tourist
hub for the region. Port Adelaide (or Yertabulti) is
envisaged as the southern ‘launch’ area for the trail.
Brochures will be prepared that describe the historical
and cultural significance of the Lefevre Peninsula to
Aboriginal people and identify the route and sites.
It is envisaged that motor vehicle access would be
required to do the complete trail; however a significant
number of sites could be accessed by bicycle or on foot.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2015.
2013 Port Festival Update
October 19 & 20 the Port will come alive with a weekend
of events, music, theatre, visual arts, food, workshops,
forums, tour and trails, and river activities as part of the
2013 Port Festival.
The Festival’s management team is thrilled by the increasing
number of quality event applications received. Events such as
Postcards to Larry, a ‘mail art’ installation made up of postcards
designed by local artists, themed ‘wishing you were here’ will
form part of the 2103 Program. This simple and fun exhibition
builds on the beauty of the Port and the love for the place
that the locals share. Artists will capture all the Port themes:
water and natural environment; local arts and culture; history;
industry; and hopefully the undiscovered! It’s about
spreading the love and sharing all the reasons why you
need to come back!
