Recycle old mobile phones
World Environment Day on 5 June is the perfect time
to round up and recycle those old mobiles, batteries
and accessories with MobileMuster.
MobileMuster’s recent annual research into how
many old mobiles there are in Australia found that the
number of unused old mobiles in Australian homes has
jumped from 22 million to 23 million – one for every
Australian citizen.
Council has been working with MobileMuster to ensure
that all residents can recycle their old mobile phones
safely and securely. This way more than 90% of the
materials inside your mobile phones will be recovered
and recycled. It also means that potentially harmful
materials will not end up in our local waterways if
thrown in the rubbish.
“What better way is there to say ‘thank you’ to the
earth than recycling your old mobiles this World
Environment Day?” asks MobileMuster Recycling
Manager Rose Read.
Recycling your old mobile through Port Adelaide Enfield
with MobileMuster is easy and free. All you have to
do is:
• Drop them off at Council’s Civic Centre or the
Library service centres at Enfield and Greenacres,
or
• Post them using a free reply-paid recycling satchel
available from any Australia Post store, or
• Go to mobilemuster.com.au to find your nearest
drop-off points or download a mailing label

Feed Freddy meat and bones
This edition Freddy Food Scraps (Council’s bio
basket character) is bringing you his third important
message about the kitchen organics recycling
program . The message is that meat and bones
CAN go in the green-lidded bin! In fact, Freddy’s
new campaign message is “Freddy loves meat and
bones - please feed Freddy these as well.” Many
people aren’t aware that meat and bones can go in
the bio basket and green-lidded bin but meat and
bones are organic material, meaning they will break
down into compost. After being collected in the
bio basket and put in the green-lidded bin, they’ll
be taken to a commercial composting facility which
reaches much higher composting temperatures
(around 70 degrees Celsius) than home composting
systems, allowing meat and bones to completely
break down into compost. Whether you compost at
home or already use the bio basket system, please
remember to put all meat and bones in the green-
lidded bin. You will be reducing the amount of waste
the community sends to landfill and helping to
produce nutrient-rich compost.
If you aren’t already using the bio basket system,
it’s easy to get and easy to use. Each year, Council
provides every household a roll of the bio bags.
The bags are not plastic - they are made from plant
material to enable them to break down along with
food scraps and garden waste put in the green-
lidded bin. If you have any questions on the kitchen
organics recycling program, or would like to
participate in the program, please contact the

Tips for using your bins
Council has recently conducted an audit of waste,
recycling and organics bins in the council area as a
way of finding out how well the three bin system is
being used by residents.
After looking at the results, we’ve come up with
some useful tips for householders:
• Remember that glass jars and metal cans are
recyclable and can go in the yellow-lidded
recycling bin. Just quickly rinse them out first - it
takes only a few seconds.
• Clothing should not be placed in the yellow-
lidded recycling bin. Clothing will not be collected
at the recycling facility and will end up in landfill.
If you have good-quality clothing that you no
longer want, take it to a charity store. If you have
old clothes that cannot be reused, they must go in
the blue-lidded waste bin.
• Bio bags (delivered by council) are to be used for
collecting food scraps to place in the green-lidded
bin. They are not for collecting general waste for
the blue-lidded bin.
• If you are unsure what item goes in which bin,
check the back of your waste collection calendar
or ring the Waste Line on 1800 777 844
