Great support for newly-
arrived Muslim women
Three years ago the Muslim Women’s Association of SA
established a support group for women at the Kilburn
Community Centre. Since then, the diverse and friendly
group has welcomed women from all walks of life and
almost every country.
The association, which is a not-for-profit organisation,
assists with settlement and services for Muslim migrants
and refugees in South Australia.
Activities, information sessions and training courses
}have been arranged to meet the needs and interests
of the women. For example, a visit from a dietician was
arranged when it was noted that a large number of women
had diabetes.
While they were aware of their diagnosis they didn’t know
what it meant or how it could be properly managed. The
dietician held a session to explain the condition and then
involved the women in cooking classes that focussed on
improving nutrition.
Following this, the women were introduced to Zumba –
something they’d never done or even heard of before! The
impact was incredible, with many of them reporting that
they felt better physically and mentally, had lost weight,
were eating better and had introduced nutritious meal
plans to their children. Some women began bringing their
teenage daughters to join in and learn about the benefits of
exercise and healthy eating.
Other group activities have included excursions to St Kilda
and Harbourtown, sewing and craft classes, traditional
Iranian marquetry, traditional Afghani embroidery and
beadwork classes, Pilates, yoga, belly dancing – even how
to ride a bike!
All women are invited to join the group in term three for
multicultural halal cooking classes, sewing, belly dancing
and self-defence classes. Classes are free and child care is
available. Contact Kilburn Community Centre on
8349 8363 for session times.
Here’s how to try out a
new sporting activity
Many people want to be more active and try out
some new sport but don’t want to commit to a
particular sporting club – and Council is making
that much more possible.
Residents are invited to join our non-competitive
recreational activities that are just based on having a
good time. Council offers a wide range of recreational
activities for children and young people, most of which
are free or very low cost. They provide opportunities
to learn new skills and meet new friends, with families
especially welcome to join in.
