Fighting fit at Lefevre
Community Stadium
Two high energy activities have been launched at
Lefevre Community Stadium – a new Karate class and
new Zumba classes.
The Makoto Ryu Karate-Do Association (MKA) has chosen
the Lefevre Community Stadium to open a new dojo, with
Black Belt Sempai Garry Houlahan as the instructor.
Suitable for both men and women, with separate classes
for adults and kids, MKA specialises in freestyle karate
combining techniques from kick boxing, boxing, ju-jitsu,
judo, kung fu and karate.
MKA Osborne will take place on Monday nights and
new participants are welcome to try out this fun form of
martial arts with their first two lessons free. Bookings are
essential so please contact Garry on 0412 803 754 or
Collette on 0412 097 994.
Then on Tuesday mornings, it’s time to forget about the
workout and just lose yourself in the music at the ultimate
dance-fitness party - the centre’s popular Zumba classes.
These classes are held every Tuesday morning from
9.15-10.15am. Contact Jo for more information on
0422 889 866.
Proud plant and pet owners
Two very different competitions have recently been
held at the Enfield Community Centre, highlighting the
commitment and passion of our local clubs in caring for
their plants and pets.
The Festival of Flowers was held on Saturday 21 and
Sunday 22 April and provided several different flower
groups the opportunity to showcase their most attractive
plants. A glorious display of orchids, African violets, ferns,
bromeliads, cactuses, succulents and even carnivorous
plants was on show over the weekend. The beautiful
selection of this year’s begonias was a particular highlight
and delighted those in attendance.
The 109th Annual Championship Cat show was on Sunday
5 May by the Cat Fancier’s Society of SA. This annual
competition has been held at Enfield Community Centre
every year since the centre opened, and was even hosted
on the same site while it was still Nailsworth Boy’s School.
197 friendly felines were entered by families from around
the state and judged by local and visiting interstate judges.
Recreation Program
for Young Carers
Council is working with the Northern Carers
Network to implement a monthly recreation
program for young carers.
‘Breakthru’ is for children and teens between the
ages of 7-18 years who provide care and support
for a parent, adult relative, sibling or other
identified person within the home environment.
The program will be held at Enfield Community
Centre on the fourth Wednesday of each month
from 4pm until 6pm. Funded by the Office for
Recreation and Sport, it is part of a range of
recreation programs offered to young people
under Council’s Street Sports program. For
further information and to book your place
in the program, contact Sharon on 8284 0388.
Transport assistance may be available.
Youth Week another
great success
This year’s Youth Week event was a great success
with 30 interactive stalls providing information
and giveaways to young people, and a range of
entertainment and performances showcasing the
talents of our local youth.
Almost 800 young people attended the expo,
which was held to celebrate and support 12-25
year olds during National Youth Week, the
largest celebration of young people in Australia.
It was a collaborative event held by the cities of
Port Adelaide Enfield, Charles Sturt and West
Torrens, the Multicultural Communities Council
and Uniting Care Wesley Port Adelaide
.
A day of harmony and fun
Kilburn Community Centre’s annual Harmony
Day was held in March, an energetic and
colourful occasion with performers from
Australian, African, Middle Eastern, Indian
and Pacific Island backgrounds contributing
to the entertainment.
More than 200 local residents attended the
event and enjoyed a delicious meal provided
by Halal Multicultural Catering.
Children were kept well entertained with a
face painter, henna tattooist, balloon artist
and shoelace artist. Several agencies held stalls
at the event where they provided valuable
community information.
The event, which is supported by the Port
Adelaide Enfield OPAL Program and Korvest,
showed what a great opportunity it provides
to unite local residents in a fun-filled and
exciting experience.
