The Federal Election in September will
not just provide an opportunity to elect
the next government; it will also, through
a referendum, be a most important
opportunity to enable the Federal
Government to continue funding to
local government directly.
It is an important referendum because
it will help maintain vital infrastructure
and services in communities such as the
City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
As a Council we’ve worked tirelessly to
minimise costs and keep our rate rises the
lowest in Adelaide while maintaining a
high standard of services to our residents.
But to continue this we must also be
certain that we will still receive vital
Federal funding for infrastructure
projects and community services –
something that two recent High Court
cases have put in doubt.
The referendum seeks to end
this uncertainty and confirm the
Federal Government’s ability to
fund local communities directly
through their councils.
The resulting change to the Constitution
will formalise what has already been
happening for more than 10 years, during
which billions of taxpayers’ dollars have
been invested in local projects such as
roads, footpaths and bridges, community
halls, ovals, childcare centres and
swimming pools.
I’m sure you will join with me in wanting
this to continue and will support the
referendum later this year.
In the meantime, the recent collapse
of a 3kg section of masonry from the
Old Customs House building further
reinforces the need for some form of
compulsory upkeep and maintenance of
heritage buildings in the Port.
I have been constantly demanding
government action to enable Council to
act on this before someone gets killed,
as they could easily have been this time.
Melbourne’s Carlton & United Brewery
wall collapse in March killed three
people. Do we have to wait for that
sort of tragedy to occur here before the
government will act?
