P2P Aug 2014 - Sep 2014 - page 2

In July I had the pleasure of joining the
Premier, Jay Weatherill in opening the
$100 million Churchill Centre on the
former Islington rail yards. This is a project
that will revitalise the area, generate as
many as 1000 new jobs and drive much
needed infrastructure in the region.
Two of the new tenants represent major
retail advances for South Australia, with
Coles first new superstore and our first
Costco store. Clearly the Churchill Centre
is going to revolutionise the way we shop
in South Australia and I congratulate
Axiom Properties for their vision and skill
in bringing all of these elements together.
The Churchill Centre supports Port
Adelaide Enfield’s strategy to build a
strong and diverse economy.
The new jobs mean the development will
undoubtedly have a positive effect on the
local economy. It will increase confidence
in the area and add vibrancy to the
region. It greatly increases the potential
for local residents to get local jobs, and
consequently it is a project that the
City of Port Adelaide has been most
willing to support.
We are now also looking forward to the
completion of the Stage 2 component of
the development of the land, being the
adjacent Costco development immediately
to the north, next to Jack Watkins Reserve.
Developments such as the Churchill
Centre are especially welcome in these
harsh economic times with job losses in
other industrial sectors contributing to our
state’s overall high unemployment rate.
Together with the substantial efforts the
State Government and your Council
are making in the rejuvenation of
Port Adelaide, the Churchill Centre
development is helping to bring new
life and prosperity across the city.
Already we are seeing signs of further
investment in our region, including
overtures from international organisations,
which leads me to believe we are on the
brink of an exciting and opportunity rich
time in the history of our city.
Ward Councillors
Port Adelaide Enfield Council
comprises a Mayor and 17 Councillors,
distributed around seven wards that
take in the whole of the City. These
are your representatives, your voice in
Council on matters that concern you
in your area, and they are the people
who make the policy decisions that
guide the Council’s administration in its
daily work. If you have any concerns
that should be brought to the attention
of Council, please contact one of the
Elected Members in your ward.

Mayor Gary Johanson
I am often impressed by the commitment
and diligence displayed by Council staff,
some of whom have been working with
us for more than 40 years. It was with
fondness that last month we said farewell
to one of our longest serving colleagues.
George Levay, Manager Parks and Gardens
decided to “pull up stumps” and seek a
new adventure away from Council life.
George started at Council in 1979 in the tree
maintenance section and built his career up
to the level of Parks and Gardens Manager.
Over the years George became well
known in our community. Any resident
or customer that has had contact with
George will remember his commitment
to resolving matters in a prompt and
fair manner.
We now welcome Simon Trill into the
role of Manager Parks and Gardens,
and I am confident that Simon will
endeavour to deliver the same level
of service to our community.
