Get cooking at Hillcrest
The Punjab Aussie Association of SA is providing a
program of free creative activities based at the Hillcrest
Community Centre each Saturday afternoon.
Every activity will run over an eight week period and a
variety of activities are planned including cooking, dance,
art and craft, and outings. The first term will be a cooking
skills program featuring food from different countries and
the following types of cuisines:
2 August - North Indian 9 August - Italian
16 August - Greek
23 August - Chinese
30 August - Mexican
6 September - Vietnamese
13 September - Egyptian 20 September - South Indian
The Punjab Aussie Association of SA invites the whole
community to participate in these activities, which are
free. The sessions provide the opportunity to get together,
meet new people and share new experiences with people
from a range of different cultural backgrounds. And if
that isn’t enough, you will also get the chance to cook
and share fantastic food. The cooking program begins
on 2 August 2014 and runs from 1-3pm at the Hillcrest
Community Centre, Queensborough Avenue, Hillcrest. For
more information contact Harmeet Kaur on 0403 231 055.
Considering volunteering?
Council’s Community Centres are looking for new
volunteers who can assist with the development and
delivery of programs and the upkeep of administrative
tasks. Each centre has specific requirements and may have
availability on differing days of the week. Volunteering is
usually only during normal office hours.
Enfield Community Centre is currently looking for
administration volunteers with good computer skills
especially in database applications while Hillcrest
Community Centre is looking for volunteers to support
daytime recreation programs for adults and children
and computer classes.
Kilburn Community Centre is looking for program
volunteers with the ability to support daytime recreation
for adults and children, pre-school and early childhood
programs such as playgroups, active play, reading time
and music time and parent support groups. Other
opportunities exist for tutors in computers and using the
internet, and arts and cultural programs. Please direct all
volunteering enquiries to Council’s Volunteer Coordinator
by calling 8405 6871.
Celebrating Wandana
Wandana Community Centre, a service
of Centacare Catholic Family Services,
is celebrating 20 years of service to the
community in 2014. To celebrate this milestone
a Family Fun Day will be held at Wandana
Community Centre on Saturday 23 August
from 11am to 3pm.
Entertainment will include a jumping castle
and face painting for children, displays,
plant sales, cultural dancing, a barbecue and
afternoon tea. Most activities are free, with
guest speakers at approximately 1.15 pm.
From small beginnings in 1994, Wandana
Community Centre (originally based in
Wandana Avenue, Gilles Plains) has developed
a strong local flavour and more than 20
programs are conducted each week. These
include the Wednesday ‘Lovely Lunch’ - a
volunteer led program, and the Friday ‘Craft,
Coffee and Chat’, both started soon after the
centre was opened.
Centre programs, such as the English language
classes, computing and cooking classes, focus
on adult community education. The new
seniors’ fitness classes are proving extremely
popular along with other fitness and wellbeing
activities – a walking group, women’s fitness
and meditation.
The Wandana Community Garden attracts a
diverse range of people on Monday mornings
and the work of this group contributes to
the pleasant environment of the community
centre. A team of 25 volunteers contributes
greatly to the centre and over 300 people
attend a variety of programs each week.
In 2006, Wandana Community Centre moved
to premises owned by the City of Port Adelaide
Enfield in Gilles Plains. The new venue
was refurbished by Centacare specifically
for the community centre and enabled an
expansion of programs. Come and join in the
celebrations at Wandana Community Centre,
14 Blacks Road, Gilles Plains from 11 am on
Saturday 23 August. We look forward to
seeing you there.
