Learning together
If English is not your first language and you wish to
improve your English language skills, or you have a
neighbour or friend who would like the opportunity to
practice English in a friendly environment, then Council’s
community centres provide different learning options that
may be of interest.
Enfield Community Centre has just begun new English
language classes with Jo, who is a qualified and
experienced teacher of English as a second language.
Having grown up overseas, she knows how hard it is to
learn a new language as an adult.
Jo is excited about teaching English at Enfield and has a
structured program to work through. The class is small at
present so students will receive much individual attention
and tailored support. There is plenty of room for more
students and classes are free. Classes are held at Enfield
Community Centre, 540 Regency Road, Enfield each
Wednesday morning from 10am-12pm. Contact David on
8342 9168 for more information or to book in.
At Hillcrest Community Centre, English classes have been
running for some time and are divided into Beginners and
Advanced groups. Elly, a qualified teacher of English, is
ably assisted by Chloe to run the beginner’s classes, which
focus on conversational English, reading, writing and
speaking and also cover more general skills for everyday
life in Australia. Classes are held on Saturday from
12.30-2.30pm and are free to attend.
Tony, with more than 45 years teaching experience, is
the tutor for the Advanced Class. This class is suitable for
people who can already read, write and speak English, but
would like to learn more and extend their skills. Classes
are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am-12pm,
and cost only a gold coin donation to attend. The Hillcrest
Community Centre is located at 27-31 Queensborough
Avenue, Hillcrest. For details phone Liz on 8266 7267.
Kilburn Community Centre at 59 Gladstone Avenue,
Kilburn also offers English language classes. For
information about these, please ring Leigh on 8405 6730.
A world of tea at Kilburn
The ‘World of Tea’ international tea bar at Kilburn
Community Centre is a monthly program providing a
journey across cultures of the world through the direct
sensory experience of the many styles and flavours of tea.
Each month, a particular theme will be presented, looking
at the development of tea within a certain culture or
exploring the range of tastes to be discovered in a
particular type of tea.
Come and expand your mind and tastebuds at this series
of engaging and relaxing sessions. For those who do not
wish to try the more obscure and unusual selections and
styles, a range of more familiar teas will be available at all
sessions to ensure everyone can enjoy a nice cuppa!
The ‘World of Tea’ is being held monthly on Tuesday
mornings from 10.30am-12pm on the following dates:
26 August, 23 September, 21 October,18 November,
9 December.
There will be a different theme each month, which will
be promoted at the centre and via the Council website.
For any questions about the program, to register your
interest or to share ideas about possible themes,
please contact Leigh at Kilburn Community Centre on
or 8405 6730.
