YOUR
Dads Read Event
Join award winning children’s author and Dads Read
ambassador Phil Cummings in celebrating Father’s Day
this year with a special night time story time. Phil has
written over 60 books for children and has been an
ambassador to the Premier’s Reading Challenge in South
Australia for the past 10 years. His latest book ‘Night Watch’
was shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Australia Book of
the Year Award 2013.
To all Dads his message is simple: spend just 10 minutes a
day reading and sharing stories with your children and you
will give them a lifelong love of reading. Dads who read
with their kids model positive behaviour and can help their
children strengthen their literacy skills and self-esteem
about reading.
On the night there will be stories and lots of fun. Children
are encouraged to dress in their pyjamas or a favourite
costume for this story time, to be held at Port Adelaide
Library on Thursday 4 September from 6.30-7.30pm. The
session is suitable for children (and their dads) of all ages
and bookings can be made by calling 8405 6580 or visiting
.
Illustrator visit – Marc
McBride (Deltora Quest)
Asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Marc
McBride would reply “King Kong!” Marc has illustrated
more than 50 book covers and countless magazines, as
well as producing artwork for advertising campaigns. He is
best known for his illustrations in the Deltora Quest series,
written by Emily Rodda.
If you enjoy the Deltora Quest series or simply love
painting, then you don’t want to miss this. Marc will talk
about the importance of imagination and looking for
inspiration from the world around us. Learn some great
painting techniques and watch how Marc easily creates a
beautiful painting using audience ideas and imagination.
Sure to be interesting, fun and informative, this session is
targeted at children 7 years and over. Bookings are
essential for the session, to be held at the Greenacres
Library on Saturday 23 August from 9.30-10.30am. Visit
or contact the
library on 8405 6540.
The Reading Hour
Reading is an important part of life, by simply sharing a book
with your child for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week, you
can help give them the gift of reading.
The Reading Hour initiative reminds parents, grandparents,
uncles and aunties that reading together doesn’t have to be a
massive undertaking and will give your child the best chance
of becoming a good reader.
Between 6-7pm on Tuesday 19 August why not do just that
and celebrate the Reading Hour 2014 with thousands of
other Australians? Whether it’s the couch, the bed or the
kitchen table, pick your favourite reading spot and get comfy.
You can make it fun for everyone.
Participate in the Reading Hour and you could be in the
running to win one of two iPad minis by simply submitting
a photo of yourself reading to your child. Alternatively, pick
up an animal colouring sheet to go in the draw to win a
selection of children’s books. See library staff for conditions
of entry. If you are stuck for something to read and share
with your children, visit your local library to have access to a
great selection of new titles.
Celebrate Science Week
Do you have fun experimenting in science class at school
and have you ever wanted to be a scientist? Would you like
to learn a little bit more about electricity and electronics?
If the answer is ‘yes’ then come along to a fun filled and
informative session run by the CSIRO as a family friendly
event, where you will build an electronic flashing light quiz
to take home with you. There will also be other activities to
experiment with on the night. Learning cool stuff and having
fun are included at this session, which is for children aged 5
years and over. The session will be held at the Port Adelaide
Library on Thursday 21 August from 6-7.30pm. Bookings are
essential at
or
contact the library on 8405 6580.
