Get composting: Council
subsidised compost bins
To help divert waste being sent to landfill, the 220 Litre
‘Gedye’ compost bin can be purchased through Council
at a subsidised price of $40 (including delivery). Payment
can be made at any Council office.
The ‘Gedye’ compost bin has a 700mm diameter x 750mm
height. These compost bins have an open bottom and must
be in direct contact with soil to allow drainage of liquid and
entry of worms and other organisms.
Composting at home allows you to make nutrient-rich
compost for your garden. If you do not wish to compost
at home, please remember food waste should go in your
green bin.
For more information, visit Council’s website
or call the Waste Line
on 1800 777 844.
Simple solutions for
hazardous waste disposal
Hazardous wastes cannot be disposed of in kerbside bins
as they are harmful to human health and the environment.
However, there are easy solutions for disposing of common
unwanted hazardous wastes.
Batteries:
There are many places to take batteries for
recycling. To locate your nearest battery recycling locations,
please visit the Recycle Right search engine at the Zero
Waste SA website
Light Globes:
These can be taken to Mitre 10, Banner
or True Value hardware stores for recycling (excludes
commercial globes and quantities).
Oil:
There are more than 85 locations across SA where
used oil can be taken to be recycled. The Recycle Right
search engine on the Zero Waste SA website
can help you find your
nearest oil recycling location.
Paint:
Paint is hazardous only when it is wet. Dry/hard paint
can be disposed of in the blue lidded general waste bin. It
is recommended paint is hardened through the addition of
a paint hardener, purchased from a local hardware store.
However, paint can also be hardened by leaving the lid off.
When the paint is hard, tap as much dry paint into the blue
lidded waste bin as possible, and place the empty, dry paint
tin into the yellow lid recycle bin for recycling.
Other Hazardous or Tricky Wastes:
The Zero Waste SA
Recycle Right search engine is a fantastic resource which
is able to assist in determining the correct disposal of most
items. Please visit
to access the
search engine.
