Vintage Boats,
Trains and Planes
Port Adelaide’s museums, the
SA Maritime Museum, National
Railway Museum and SA Aviation
Museum are producing the first
Festival of Vintage Boats, Trains
and Planes for the Labour Day
Weekend, Sunday 5 and Monday
6 October 2014.
The event will celebrate South
Australia’s first heritage precinct
and our love of vintage boats,
trains and planes.
Dedicated trains will bring
passengers directly to the National
Railway Museum from Adelaide
Station. They will connect with
vintage trams running from
Glenelg to the city. At one end of
Lipson Street a tethered hot air
balloon and helicopters will lift
passengers above the Aviation
Museum. Down on the ground,
volunteers will demonstrate
craft of stretching canvas over
timber aircraft wings and visitors
will bring out some of their
restoration projects.
At the other end of the street,
the 1920s coastal trader Falie,
the brigantine One & All will be
open to visitors. Craftsmen will
demonstrate trades of the age
of sail including boat building,
caulking, sail making, boiler
making, coopering. The Maritime
Museum will bring out some of
its unseen gems including
a timber power boats, James
Hardy’s championship dinghies,
and a naval whaler.
And, we are inviting owners
of timber putt putts, yachts,
hydroplanes, rowing shells and
speed boats to all take part.
If you would like to join South
Australia’s first Festival of Vintage
Boats, Trains & Planes call the SA

This will be an event for the
whole family – there will be food,
performance and a full day of
attractions along Lipson Street,
Port Adelaide, from the wharf to
the Aviation Museum.
To ensure the success of the event
the SA Maritime Museum, the
National Railway Museum and the
SA Aviation Museum will all open
their doors for free. Mark the date
in your diary!
Surprising SALA
Council is proud to support this
year’s annual SALA (South Australian
Living Artists) Festival. SALA will run
from 1-24 August and will feature
exhibitions and open studios across
our city, showcasing the work of
emerging and established artists
from Largs to the Port and from
Sefton Park to Klemzig.
The exhibitions will feature in
galleries, restaurants and cafes and
other local businesses.
A number of exhibitions are
hosting special opening events,
which is a great way to meet and
support the artists. For example
Studio Potters of SA in Klemzig is
hosting raku firing, live music and a
sausage sizzle, followed by an open
studio weekend with workshop
demonstrations, and 7 Rooms on
St Vincent Street has joined forces
for a group opening night. See the
local SALA guide for all exhibition
opening details.
Council’s SALA guide will be
available from the Port Adelaide
Visitor Information Centre, Civic
Centre, Council’s libraries and
community centres, participating
galleries and venues and at
from late July.
‘One & All’ tall
ship sets sail
Day and twilight trips on board the
tall ship One & All offer a delightful
opportunity for you to experience
sailing, including the chance to be
involved in setting the sails if you
are game. The One & All is berthed
in Port Adelaide’s Inner Harbor at
the waterfront end of Lipson Street.
Sailing constitutes a truly unique
part of an experience aboard a tall
ship as you watch the wind fill the
sails and feel the ship lift under the
wind’s power. The moment the wind
takes over and the sound of the
engine fades away is like stepping
back in time.
Upcoming sailing dates are:
• 6 September
• 26 October
• 15, 29 November
• 6, 20, 31 December
Bookings are essential -

Navy Day
The first ever Merchant Navy Day
in Port Adelaide was officially
proclaimed on 3 September, 1998,
and has since been held as a
special annual day both in South
Australia and throughout Australia.
The recognition of this day will
continue to raise the profile of what
our Australian Merchant Navy has
contributed to the development of
world trade.
Community members are invited
to attend a march on Wednesday
3 September. The march starts at
11am outside the Visitor Information
Centre in Port Adelaide and will
then proceed to the Navigator
