Have you noticed some new signs
around the Port Adelaide and
Lefevre Peninsula areas recently?
These signs are part of the newly
developed Mudlangga to Yertabulti
(M2Y) Track a project funded by
Council, the Indigenous Heritage
Program Unit of the Department of
Prime Minister and Cabinet,
Renewal SA, Defence Housing SA
and Anglicare SA.
The track tells the stories of Aboriginal
people who have lived in or had
a strong association with the area
for many years. Dr Kristine Peters
interviewed 15 people, recording
their stories. The storytellers each had
different memories and different stories
and they have been quoted ‘as they
were told’ in signage, a brochure and
on a website. The information does not
attempt to provide a complete picture of
Aboriginal life, history and culture, but
it is the authentic experience of much-
respected members of our community.
There are a total of 24 sites on the
track, all of which have a QR code
that links directly to the website,
The learning to be gained by following
these stories is relevant to us all.
A sign at Taperoo, for instance, quotes
Pat Waria-Read: “I think the reason we
accepted those white men when they
first arrived was because we believed
them to be ghosts. We thought that
the white people were the ghost of our
ancestors, so we didn’t attack them or
throw a spear through them. We mostly
thought that pale people were our
ancestors coming back.”
The track can be followed by cycle
or car, or sections can be walked.
The brochure and website give more
information and stories, and the website
incorporates a story map, background
information to the project and links
to other websites. Council hopes that
the track will be visited by locals,
tourists and school groups to further
the understanding of our Aboriginal
community. The track will be officially
launched in late August 2014.
