Landscape with a difference
Woodville Garden School Year 5-6 students have recently
created 37 mosaic panels for the Council’s Murchison
Street Water Sensitive Landscape Project.
Council’s Environmental Projects Officer provided the
students with the environmental principles of Water
Sensitive Urban Design and the benefits of stormwater
treatment within a street landscape. As the Woodville
Gardens School is close to the project, Council provided
the students with an opportunity to participate in the
design and development of mosaic tiles for the landscape
component to help incorporate natural, heritage and
cultural themes.
The students were all very excited and interested in how
the water sensitive design treatment would clean the local
stormwater. They worked with artists Bridgette Minuzzo,
Lauren-Jade Ryan and Ray Meandering to create mosaic
tiles for Murchison Street. Over five weekly sessions in
Term 2, the students learnt a wide range of skills as they
created designs, translated them into paper mosaics, learnt
to cut and create their designs with mosaic tiles, glue
them and finally grout them.
The students gained a great deal from the experience
of working with the artists, shown by some of
their comments:
“We met the artists Bridgette, Lauren-Jade, Rae and Jane.
Jane was from the council. I felt so lucky and so special.”
“This is a really big honour plus such a big responsibility
to have worked with these artists especially being the only
class in the whole school. “
“I enjoyed all of it because it is better than video games.”
“I would like to say THANK YOU to Bridgette, Lauren-
Jade, Rae and Jane for such an amazing experience and
that I am going to be able to remember this for the rest of
my life.”
