February was THE

month for music!

St Jerome’s Laneway

Festival

The hugely successful Laneway

Festival in the Port this year drew a

crowd of 8000 through the gates. It’s

undeniably become a hot ticket on

the music festival calendar and this

year didn’t disappoint. Ticket sales

have doubled in the three years it’s

been held at Port Adelaide.

Mayor Gary Johanson got into the

swing of things early by starting the

day on Triple J’s brekky program

spruiking Laneway at the Port.

Adelaide Symphony

Orchestra

A change of pace – but no less

impressive. On February 24, Kilburn

Community Centre was treated

to a performance by a special 8

person ensemble from the Adelaide

Symphony Orchestra. The lunchtime-

time free concert drew a crowd

of around 300 people – including

children from local schools, older

citizens and multi-cultural community

groups. For one spell-binding

hour the musicians played to a

captivated audience – and spent time

education the crowd about their

music, and instruments. It was the

first experience of live orchestral

music for many, and one that surely

won’t be forgotten. It was part of a

‘concert tour’ being conducted by the

ASO through suburbs of Adelaide.

Council would like to congratulate

Community Development Officer,

Christine Loveday, who runs the

Kilburn Community Centre and

worked tirelessly to promote

the event.

Weaving

Workshops at

Kilburn

A series of workshops by weavers

from different cultural backgrounds

and traditions will be run at Kilburn

Community Centre on Fridays from

10am until 2pm during May and June

2016. There will be Ngarrindjeri,

Tongan and contemporary weavers

to name a few. This is inspired by the

weaving sculptures along Prospect

Road, Kilburn and Blair Athol, which

represent the practice of weaving in

many different cultures. Bookings are

essential. If you are interested, please

contact Jane Marr, Arts and Cultural

Development Officer on 8405 6848 or

The Boat-Builders

Artists Therese and Christopher

Williams have been commissioned

to create several temporary public

art works featuring video animations,

inspired by oral histories recorded by

the Port of Adelaide National Trust

Branch, of people associated with the

boat-building and fishing industries

of Port Adelaide. The works will be

display during the month of May for

SA History Festival at the Port Library,

Port Adelaide Visitor Information

Centre and selected local cafes. For

Visitor Information Centre or go to
