BEACH NETBALL
Australia’s largest Beach Netball Festival will return to Adelaide,
24-25 March, with players converging on Semaphore from all
over Australia for the second year running in the annual social
participation event. Over 500 players are expected to attend
the weekend competition.
Beach Netball is a festival of fun, fitness and wellbeing with an
electric atmosphere, set to a soundtrack provided by some of
the county’s best Red Bull DJs! It’s a day out with music, free
giveaways and a Chemist Warehouse live site.
Beach Netball is netball, but not as we know it, played on a
half court, with five on each side, no positions, no thirds, no
shoes and with the ability for anyone to score. It’s about getting
together with friends for a day out, doing something fun, that’s a
little different.
The event will include a junior and senior competition and the
exclusive Beach Netball Shoot Out.The senior competition is
open to women and mixed teams over the age of 18, and the
junior competition will be split into age categories of under 18,
under 15 and under 13.
All teams will compete in a one day round robin tournament
including finals with the seniors on Saturday playing for the giant
cheque and James Cook University Cup, and the Juniors round
robin event happening on Sunday.
Event Director Kate Hardwick said that she has seen
phenomenal interest and growth in the Beach Netball
festivals all over Australia.
"Beach Netball is challenging the way we approach sporting
events, it’s about providing entertainment for everyone
involved in the competition and gives brands the opportunities
to provide engagement of value to the participants and
supporters.”
Team registrations are now open, with all interested players
encouraged to enter their teams early, as the event will sell out.

TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under left from Port Adelaide
on 16 January, after a 19 year absence from the Port. Official
figures indicate that more than 10,000 people came out for the
race that day, and the Port was bustling as the peloton of riders
surged across Birkenhead Bridge.
The river was a riot of colour as boats of all shapes and sizes
created a flotilla to view the start of the race. Media coverage
meant that there was international attention for Port Adelaide
and the chance for us to really show off all that makes the
Port unique.
Local Artists Bob Daly and Kalyna Micenko worked with
community members to create hundreds of colourful banners to
line the streets for the event. Bob and Kalyna are award winning
Port Adelaide artists who have over 30 years experience of
creating fabulous art projects with people of all ages in the
community. Most of the flag designs were drawn by junior
primary aged students to the theme of Port River Life.
Primary aged students enlarged, cut and pinned the designs
exactly as they had been drawn. Secondary students, along with
interested people in the community also drew, cut and pinned
some of the designs.
The appliqué flags were sewn and assembled at Bob and Kalyna’s
SpinFX Australia
studio in Port Adelaide. In total, 1,050 people of
all ages from the community worked with Bob and Kalyna on
the appliqué flag project. Each flag took seven hours to make
and will be used again to decorate the City for special events.
There was so much colour around the City that we were
awarded Best Dressed Town Award for Day One of the Tour
Down Under.
