Port Adelaide Trams
At Port Adelaide on Monday morning the
ceremony of turning the first sod of the
permanent way for the electric tramway
system was performed by the Mayor (Mr. J.
H. Clouston), in the presence of a large and
representative gathering. The site chosen
for the ceremony was in St. Vincent Street,
opposite the Town Hall. A portion of the
roadway was barricaded off, and in a scheme
of decoration the colors of the corporation —
red and yellow — were conspicuous, whilst
a big display of bunting across the street
added gaiety to the scene. The contract for
the construction of the permanent way for
that portion of the Port Adelaide system on
the eastern side of the river has been let to
Mr. Joseph Timms, the total amount of the
contract being £18,727.
The contract comprises the laying of a single
track along St. Vincent-street, from Jervois
Bridge to Commercial Road, and double track
along Commercial Road from St. Vincent
Street to the Grand Junction Road; and
single track along Commercial Road and the
Port Road from the Grand Junction Road to
Cheltenham Parade, also a single track along
the Grand Junction Road from Commercial
Road to the Dry Creek railway crossing, a
total length of single track of approximately
41/4 miles.

Preservation Needs
Assessment
The Library Service was awarded a $4,400 federal
Community Heritage Grant to fund a Preservation Needs
Assessment of the Local History Collection. The grant was
announced at the National Library of Australia, Canberra,
on Tuesday 29 October 2013. Grants worth $426,000 were
distributed to 77 community groups and organisations
from around Australia to assist in the identification
and preservation of community owned but nationally
significant heritage collections.
The Preservation Needs Assessment was conducted by
Rosie Heysen of Artlab, who provided a comprehensive
report which will be used to guide future conservation and
preservation projects.
A significant item identified and researched during the
Preservation Needs Assessment was an autographed
tablecloth from 1896, signed by His Excellency the
Governor Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, Lady Victoria Buxton
and the Mayor of Port Adelaide and the Mayor of Adelaide.
