The 12 tips to reduce
waste to landfill at
Christmas
The festive season is a busy time usually filled
with celebrations and parties. It is also the time
of highest consumption and the most important
time for us to minimise waste sent to landfill.
Here are some handy tips to help:
1. Use reusable dinnerware for parties instead
of disposable plates, cups and cutlery
2. Dispose of food in the green lid bin
3. Purchase experiences instead of gifts
4. Donate unwanted gifts to charity or
keep receipts and exchange them
5. Hold a Kris Kringle or Secret Santa
6. Purchase gifts with recyclable or
minimal packaging
7. Collect 10c bottles and cans for recycling
8. Use newspaper to wrap presents
9. Save and reuse good wrapping paper
10. Recycle wrapping paper in the yellow lid bin
11. Plan to prevent food wastage
12. Buy bulk to minimise packaging
By adopting these tips you will reduce waste to
landfill, help the environment, save resources
and save money! For more information on waste

Summer Safety
With summer almost upon us it is worth thinking
about ways we can keep our homes safe and
cool, and how to reduce the risk of fires in our
neighbourhoods.
Property owners and occupiers are responsible
for ensuring trees and other vegetation, except
naturally occurring, non-nurtured vegetation,
are kept clear of private overhead powerlines.
This includes vegetation overhanging from a
neighbouring property. Tree trimming involves
taking adequate safety precautions and using
particular skills, and may be best undertaken by
a contractor on your behalf.
While tree trimming near powerlines should
be ongoing, the best solution is to avoid
planting inappropriate trees near powerlines
and certainly not directly underneath them. For
more information, including a list of suitable
vegetation for around powerlines, visit
SA Power Networks has also advised that there
may be periods over the summer when power
outages occur. If you have a smart phone or
similar device, sign up to the SA Power
Networks Power@ My Place service at
for information
about known power outage in the area.
Natural conservation in
your own backyard
The annual ‘Summer of Discovery’ Conservation program is
on again, when Council, in partnership with Conservation
Volunteers Australia (CVA), has organised a number of
conservation activities over the summer months.
The aim of the program is to provide volunteer awareness
about the importance of our local natural environment within
our urban reserves, and provide people with an opportunity to
discover new natural wonders in their own backyard.
The Summer of Discovery Conservation Program will be
undertaken over six days between November 2014 and March
2015. The conservation activities to be undertaken are:
• Planting of aquatics within the Gillman Wetlands to
provide habitat for local birds and migratory birds
• Reptile and fox den surveys along the coastal dunes
• Weed control activities at various locations at Semaphore
• Ridley Grove Community Garden biodiversity and
butterfly trail rejuvenation work
The Summer of Discovery Conservation Program is always
looking for volunteers. If you would like to know more about
the program, please contact Craig Hughes on 8405 6028
or enquire about volunteering at Conservation Volunteers
Australia on 1800 032 501.
2015 Waste Collection
Schedule options
In 2015 there are five ways to determine your bin
collection schedule:
1. Download the Local Government Association ‘My
Local Services’ app. Once downloaded, checking your
scheduled collection is easy: simply open the app and
click on the waste icon. There is also a handy reminder
function that when turned on, will prompt you to put the
bins out the day before collection.
2. Download and save or print your calendar from the waste
section of Council’s website
3. Use the online waste collection schedule search engine
on Council’s website
4. Collect a calendar from the Civic Centre, Community
Centres, Council libraries or the Visitor Information Centre, or
5. Call the waste line 1800 777 844 to request a calendar be
posted to your home address.
